Learning to read is a process built up slowly over time for each child.
At Bournmoor Primary we have lots of ways to help children learn their letters, sounds and key words to develop their reading skills. We follow the ‘Letters and Sounds’ programme to support children in their development of phonics and reading. In Reception children also learn sounds with the help of Jolly Phonics actions. We find this allows all pupils to engage in the learning and to help remember the sounds. At our Parent Reading Workshop we aim to help parents to see first hand how to do this.
In Year 1 pupils take the Phonics Test which assesses their ability to blend sounds to read words. Some of the sounds make up nonsense words so we have attached a list of these to try at home. At school pupils gets lots of support with this including using an ICT package which makes it fun and engaging.
